Sectors

Gauteng is South Africa's main manufacturing base with almost half of all factories located in the province, particularly in Ekurhuleni and Metsweding. The manufacturing sector stimulates the growth of other economic activities.

Agriculture

Although Gauteng makes its money by being the commercial heartland of the country, the agricultural sector still plays a role. A large area of the province falls within the so-called Maize Triangle. Cullinan and Heidelberg hold important agricultural land where groundnuts, sorghum, cotton and sunflowers are produced.

Education

The province has the largest number of education centres in South Africa. Johannesburg is home to the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg, formerly the Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU). Tshwane has the largest residential university in South Africa - the University of Pretoria. Both Johannesburg and Tshwane have a wide range of tertiary educational institutions including technikons, technical colleges, teacher's training colleges, business schools and training academies in marketing and media.

Believed to be the largest correspondence university in the world, the University of South Africa (Unisa) is located in Tshwane.

Manufacturing

Gauteng has over 9 300 companies in the manufacturing sector, employing more than 600 000 people. Gross annual output exceeds R50 billion and is expected to grow significantly as international markets open up. Industries that have contributed significantly to this output are: basic iron and steel, fabricated and metal products, food, machinery, electrical machinery, appliances and electrical supplies, motor vehicle parts and accessories, and chemical products.

Mining

There are 159 mines (44 of them gold mines) in Gauteng that together produce a quarter of South Africa's total mineral production. Although gold, diamond and coal mining continue to provide jobs and valuable foreign exchange, their combined contribution to Gauteng's economy is declining. Mining produces only 6 percent of Gauteng's total income and 31 percent of export earnings. Extractive mining is predominantly located in the West Rand.

Technology

Gauteng's wide range of IT, telecommunications and high-tech industries are growing in leaps and bounds. All the big names in IT worldwide are present, and the bustling high-tech corridor in Midrand (halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria) is the most rapidly developing IT space in the country.

Tourism

The province boasts unique township tourism, excellent nightlife, routes that show the history of the anti-apartheid struggle, tours of historical sites, excellent shopping malls and eco-tourism adventures.

Four of the 11 Blue IQ projects are directly related to tourism:
  • the development of the Cradle of Humankind into a major sustainable tourist attraction;
  • the establishment of a "Big Five" nature reserve in Metsweding;
  • the Johannesburg inner city development of the Newtown Cultural Precinct; and
  • the development of Constitution Hill in Braamfontein.
Not only is business tourism on the rise, so too is community tourism, which means visitors get to have an authentically home grown experience - and local communities benefit too.

The end of apartheid signalled an end to many restrictions, including restrictions on travel. Many South Africans are not only getting their first chance to travel to foreign shores, they are also discovering the wondrous gems of their own country for the first time.

The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA), situated in Newtown in Johannesburg, has put together a marketing campaign to promote Gauteng both locally and internationally. The GTA has identified six core tourism features that will be unpacked further in the section 'Six key experiences'. The motto of this tourism campaign is Waya Waya - 24/7 - that is, in Gauteng the fun continues 24 hours a day.
